Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week

BVFD Visits JFK Elementary

🚒Stop, drop and roll is still the gold standard of fire safety.

Students at JFK Elementary School heard that tip and so much more during Fire Prevention Week presentations by the Brewster Fire Department this morning.

Fireman Tom and Fireman Ken talked to students in the auditorium about smoke detectors, calling 911, having a safety plan, how smoke rises, how to leave a burning building, why it’s important to feel a closed door with the back of your hand and what to do if your clothes catch fire–stop, drop, and roll. Then they gave demonstrations with their stuffed rescue dog Sparky on what to do and what not to do.

The highlight though was outside the school. Students lined up to see the trucks–hook and ladder, engine company, tanker pumper–and of course spray the hose. Every elementary student got to spray the hose! For some there was a magic that suggested a future in the department.

At least 10 members of the Brewster Volunteer Fire Department were on hand to help students get up onto the trucks, work the hose or pass out stickers: “I visited the Fire Station.” One member of the fire department has a son in a UPK classroom--he was on double duty.

The visit lines up perfectly with the Fire Prevention Week and the Brewster Fire Department's Open House on Sunday, October 13, which will feature more fire safety, school bus safety and seat belt safety. For information: https://www.pcvfa.org/news/129/BREWSTER-FD-Hosts-its-Annual-OPEN-HOUSE
